Leonardo settles in Rome under the protection of Giuliano de’ Medici, brother of Leo X. A later account mentions a portrait of a Florentine woman made at Giuliano’s request. This has fuelled debate, but the Louvre considers it compatible with confusion about which works the witness saw, rather than sufficient reason to replace Lisa as the sitter.
