Chapter 1 / 6 · 1587

A prince between two shores

A crown too great

Saved on this browser

Sigismund is the son of John III of Sweden and Catherine Jagiellon. Through his father he belongs to the Vasa dynasty and has rights to the Swedish succession; through his mother he connects with Poland’s former royal house. His Catholic upbringing distinguishes him from a Swedish kingdom that has moved towards Lutheranism. Stephen Báthory’s death opens an opportunity in the elective monarchy of Poland-Lithuania. Jagiellonian descent favours Sigismund’s candidacy, but does not automatically give him the crown. He must secure the electors’ support and accept their conditions. The young prince may unite the Baltic’s two shores, although each has its own rules for recognising and limiting its king.
