Chapter 14 / 17 · 1477

Nancy: the duke on the frozen field

Burgundy: the kingdom that never was

Saved on this browser

On 5 January 1477, the army coming to relieve Nancy defeats the Burgundian forces. Charles disappears in the battle. Two days later, his body is found beside a pond, stripped of clothing and badly wounded; his servants must identify him. The prince who had prepared his coronation ends on the frozen battlefield. His death destroys the personal leadership holding the project together. No son remains to continue the war. Mary, his only daughter, inherits scattered territories, privileges to negotiate and enemies ready to exploit the catastrophe. The question is no longer what kingdom Charles might found: it is how much of his inheritance can survive.

Mary of Burgundy

Heir to Charles the Bold from 1477 and titular Duchess of Burgundy. Her marriage to Maximilian of Habsburg linked his house to the Burgundian Netherlands. Disputes with France over the duchy, Franche-Comté and Artois mean that the entire inheritance cannot be presented as territory she governed continuously.
