Life of Mary I of Scotland

Queen at six days old

The daughter of James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise, Mary was born at Linlithgow in 1542 and inherited the throne at six days old. To remove her from English marriage plans, she was sent to France in 1548. Educated at Henry II’s court, she married the Dauphin in 1558; he subsequently reigned as Francis II.

Scotland

Widowed in 1560, she returned to a Scotland that had just adopted the Reformation. She married her cousin Lord Darnley, the father of her son James. Darnley was murdered in 1567, and her subsequent marriage to the Earl of Bothwell, suspected of the crime, provoked a rebellion by the nobles, who forced her to abdicate in favour of her son.

A prisoner in England

In 1568 she fled to England and sought help from her cousin Elizabeth I, who detained her for nearly nineteen years. As a Catholic with a claim to the English throne, she became the focus of several conspiracies. After the discovery of the Babington Plot, she was tried and beheaded at Fotheringhay in 1587. Her son James inherited England in 1603.
