Life of Francis I of France

Marignano

The son of Charles of Angoulême and Louise of Savoy, Francis was born at Cognac in 1494 and succeeded his cousin and father-in-law Louis XII in 1515. That same year he defeated the Swiss at Marignano and conquered Milan.

The rival of Charles V

He lost the imperial election of 1519 to Charles V, and from then on the two fought in Italy. Captured at Pavia in 1525, he was released after the Treaty of Madrid. He sought an alliance with Sultan Suleiman, a scandalous step in the eyes of many contemporaries.

The Renaissance king

He welcomed Leonardo da Vinci to Amboise, transformed Fontainebleau and founded the Collège royal. The Ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts (1539) prescribed French for judicial documents. He died in 1547.

  • 2026-09-30 · The duchy is limited to Dijon and Autun; each other fief now enters the map only under its dated ruler. John III of Namur and the Nevers/Rethel branch were added. The previous shape combined later counties and unrelated lands as if all belonged to the duchy from 1363.
