Life of John III Sobieski

A soldier magnate

He was born in 1629 at Olesko, in Polish Ruthenia, into a noble family. He fought Cossacks, Tatars, Swedes and Muscovites in the wars that devastated the Commonwealth in the mid-seventeenth century. He became Grand Marshal and Grand Hetman of the Crown.

An elected king

His victory over the Ottomans at Khotyn (1673) earned him election as King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania in 1674. Married to the French Marie Casimire de La Grange d’Arquien, he attempted an alliance policy with France that produced no results.

Vienna, 1683

Allied with Emperor Leopold I, he led the relief army that defeated Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa, who was besieging Vienna, at the Kahlenberg on 12 September 1683. The battle opened the Holy League’s Christian counteroffensive, which led to the Habsburg reconquest of Hungary.

The final years

His later Moldavian campaigns brought no lasting conquests, and the Diet, paralysed by the liberum veto, limited his government. He died at his Wilanów palace in 1696. His son James was not elected; the crown passed to Augustus II of Saxony.
