Life of Louis XIV of France

A four-year-old king

The son of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria, Louis was born at Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1638 and inherited the throne in 1643. His mother acted as regent, with Cardinal Mazarin as chief minister. The Fronde (1648–1653), a series of revolts by the Parlement of Paris and the great nobles, forced the court to flee the capital and left the young king with a lasting distrust of both.

Personal rule

The Peace of the Pyrenees (1659) and his marriage to Maria Theresa, daughter of Philip IV, ended the war with Spain. On Mazarin’s death in 1661 he announced that he would govern without a chief minister. With Colbert he reorganised finance, manufactures and the navy; with Louvois, the army. In 1682 he installed the court and government at Versailles, where ceremonial served to keep the high nobility close to the king.

Wars and frontiers

His wars — the War of Devolution, the Dutch War, the Nine Years’ War and the War of the Spanish Succession — enlarged France in Flanders, Franche-Comté and Alsace, at the cost of ever broader European coalitions. In 1685 he revoked the Edict of Nantes, driving tens of thousands of Huguenots into exile. The War of the Spanish Succession placed his grandson Philip V on the throne of Spain but left French finances exhausted.

The end of a line

In his final years his son, his eldest grandson and his eldest great-grandson died. When he died at Versailles in 1715, after a reign of seventy-two years, he was succeeded by a five-year-old great-grandson, Louis XV, under the regency of Philippe d’Orléans. His court was a model imitated throughout Europe.
